If they can give it a good driving feel along with a responsive 7-speed DCT I think that would be great, as long as they don’t price it too high.

They’re aiming at the GLI, according to the article, which starts at a smidge under $30k CAD. The Elantra Ultimate goes for around that price, so I would guesstimate that it would be max $34k CAD if they only offer it fully loaded, and it might go for around the Elantra Ultimate price if it isn’t.

It’s good to see that Hyundai is finally listening to it’s customers and working on getting those shift times down into the milliseconds. Who needs a Panamera anyway?

Right? If it handles as well as it looks, I think we’ll all be better off. Honestly, it would make it a good contender for when I have money.

My girlfriend drives a current generation Accent, and even with the slushbox, it’s a pretty great thing to drive. It’s light, the steering has a decent amount of feel, and it has, by far, the most powerful engine in its class. Seriously, for some reason, they decided to give their Fit/Fiesta/Versa Note competitor the 140 horsepower direct injected 1.6 that you get in the base Veloster. It’s a great car to use to show people how, even when it comes to their cheapest, most basic model, Hyundai is fucking rocking it, and have come a long way in the past 10-15 years. They are a really good option in every segment right now.

But the performance Hyundai the world needs right now is an Accent Sport with the engine out of the Veloster Turbo (the front end in the Veloster is the same as the Accent, it’ll fit no probs), firmed-up suspension, upgraded brakes (just throw some Elantra ones on there), and some sticky tires. It’s cool, even, if it’s a detuned version of that 1.6 turbo, putting 175-180 or so. The Fiesta ST is alone in the small hot hatch segment, and a turbo Accent coming in at a lower price would be the perfect car to dethrone the king.

Hyundai has been building the cars that Honda built 15 years ago. I don’t mean that in terms of refinement or quality or whatever, they’re a used Honda. I mean that in spirit, they do the whole Honda “intelligently engineered and built, everything you need, nothing you don’t, quality and precision with a touch of sportiness (if you want it) at an affordable price” thing now better than Honda currently does. US-market Honda, with the exception of surprise bits of wonderful like the Accord Sport, seems to want to steal the “America’s best brand new used car” crown from Toyota, without the confidence (or possibly ability) to just, well, Toyota the fuck out of their cars and build a car that you could only describe as a “fabulous shitbox”.

Hyundai spent a ton of money and put forth a ton of effort to correct the problems with their brand, and it shows. I’ve said in the past that the most significant thing to happen in automotive history so far this century is how quickly Hyundai/Kia transformed from the absolute bottom of the barrel to a genuine competitor, if not class leader, in every segement.

Also, I’m going to use this once again to state that ever since they adopted the tiger nose, Kia has had, by far, the best-looking full line of cars out of any manufacturer. And the tiger nose is the kind of brand-defining signature design element that you don’t see come along very often, the first corporate grill to come along in ages that could be as iconic as the BMW kidneys or Dodge crosshair. And the Koreans are doing so great right now, I’m confident that it will be one of the all-time greats.

Wow, that’s an attractive car. GLI competitor? I can see my wife in this. Hope it stays on for a couple model years, she’d be ready for an upgrade in 2018.

Going to politely disagree with you there.

It is certainly attractive. Looks like a combination of a Mazda 3 and Toyota Carolla
